THE DANCE
By Anthony Edwards
Every lovely minute of every frightening hour
Spent with one another in our thirst for love and power
Is but a dance we dance amidst a waiting throng
Each one waiting on a chance the band will play our song
The first step, like a handshake, begins each dance anew
With each new step we wonder at what each of us will do
As time goes by we learn just how this very dance will go
Based on what we think we feel and what we think we know
We dance with spirits high, when the band is playing our song
Until the music changes, then we simply move along
Then find the fault with others, who, on the other hand
Find the charge distasteful and prefer to blame the band
Each two-step, every heartbreak, each tango, every tear
Is but another stitch in the fabric of our fear
Our lives are but a dance playing out like a ballet
When your dance is over, do you bow or walk away
